Because of a trademark issue we are officially renaming our popular Island Hopper Double IPA to Category 5 IPA. The response for this beer was so great that we simply could not leave it out of our Category IPA Series. With that starting this Sunday at the 1 Year Anniversary we will bring back this beer as Category 5 IPA.

For those lovers of the original Category 5 IPA fear not. We are working on the recipe of this beer on our pilot system and will be releasing it again under a different name in the future. Be on the lookout for that soon.

On February 7th much of the Northeastern part of the US were bracing themselves for a blizzard. Nemo, as the storm was called, forced the postponement of the Extreme Beer Fest and put a damper on many of beer geek spirits. But down here in sunny South Florida we were brewing up something special. Our good friend Tim Ogden of Cigar City Brewing and the head brewer of the Cigar City Brewpub traveled from Tampa to Boynton Beach. Mike and Tim made a new beer unlike one that either brewery had made.

The base is a rye IPA with a generous amount of late addition hops for flavor and aroma. We then added fresh, local wild flower honey followed by local Temple oranges. The result is the beer we are calling Desert Inn Rye IPA, named after the historic stop on Route 60 in Yeehaw Junction. The iconic hotel and bar is located about half way between Due South and Cigar City.

It’s with this that we are proud to announce the dual release of Desert Inn Rye IPA on Saturday March 2nd. We say dual because we will be releasing the Desert Inn in BOTH Tampa and South Florida at 4 pm. In Tampa it will be unveiled at the Florida Brewer’s Guild Festival in Ybor City while our Boynton Beach taproom will be hosting the South Florida release.

We couldn’t be more excited to unveil this collaborative effort to the folks of Tampa and Boynton Beach at the same exact time.

Many visitors to the Due South Brewing Co. taproom ask when we will release one of the beers from the barrels. We can finally give you an answer to this question along with answers to the questions that are sure to follow.

Friday February 15th we will be releasing the highly anticipated Apple Brandy Barrel Aged Caramel Cream Ale. This is our signature brew, Caramel Cream Ale, that was aged in Laird & Company Apple Brandy Barrels. We poured a case of these at the Jupiter Craft Brewers Festival a couple weeks ago and it was all gone in 6 minutes! Now you have your chance to own a bottle of your own.

We will be releasing 180 bottles at 5 pm to the public. It will be $15 per bottle with a limit of 2 bottles per person. Additionally we will have one 5 gallon keg on tap for pours (no growlers) and once it’s gone, it’s gone. The taproom will be open our normal Friday hours from noon until 11 pm.

Lucille’s on Wheels will be here serving up their delicious BBQ, sliders and other treats.

We hope the anticipation is well worth the wait on this beer as we are extremely excited to be offering our barrel aged beer to the public for the first time. We can’t wait to see you on Friday for this great event.

Last year’s inaugural South Florida Beer Week was an absolute success. Events all over Palm Beach, Broward and Dade counties led up to the traditional Jupiter Craft Brewers Festival. While we were a part of the fest we were not yet open to take part in the rest of the fun going on around the area. Alas it is a new year and Due South will be in full force with the 2013 edition of the South Florida Beer Week.

The use of used spirits barrels for aging beer has taken off in craft brewing. If you’ve walked through the brewery recently you have probably noticed a few barrels sitting on racks. We are excited to have started the Due South Brewing Co. barrel aging program.

We currently have 3 Laird Apple Brandy barrels and 1 Jack Daniels Bourbon barrel. Owner and head brewer, Mike Halker’s favorite Whiskey is Jack Daniels so the choice to get a Jack barrel was a simple one. The Laird Apple Brandy barrels are the babies of our resident beer geek, Mike Jurewicz, as he has a great appreciation for beers he has had that used those barrels.

When we received them they were freshly emptied, as in the last week before sent out. Each barrel has a capacity of 53 gallons. Even though we give a quick rinse to the inside of the barrels there is still the likelihood of residual spirits in the wood extracting itself into the beers. Because of this, there is the potential of the ABV of the beers to be slightly higher than normal once out of the barrels. It’s not a whole lot though, maybe a tenth of a percent or two.

The first barrel Due South Brewing Co. ever filled was one of the Laird Apple Brandy barrels. We put our flagship beer, Caramel Cream Ale, in it with hopes of creating a nice intermingling of the caramel notes from the beer and the apple flavors from the brandy barrel. It was filled in early November and we just tested it yesterday. In our opinion we are almost there on this one. You will definitely hear about this beer soon.

The second one we filled was also a Laird Apple Brandy barrel. With this one we put in the base beer of the very popular Cafe Ole Espresso Porter. Essentially the beer is a vanilla porter as it was added to the barrel before the espresso treatment. This one was filled the day after our first one and we tried this one as well yesterday. We think this is coming along but still needs more time in the barrel. We’ll try it again in a few weeks.

As for the last Laird Apple Brandy barrel and the Jack Daniels barrel, we filled those yesterday. Each one received 53 gallons of our upcoming imperial stout called Mariana Trench. We are anticipating this one to stay in the barrels much longer, probably between 4 – 6 months.

We do not know yet what we are going to do with the barrels when we are done with them. We may be able to reuse some of them again for one more treatment or we may turn them into furniture for the taproom. If we decide to open them up for sale to the public we will certainly let you know.

We will likely be bottling the barrel aged beers. As we get closer to each one being ready, we will announce more details.

Cheers!

The PBPulse just named Due South the best brewpub/brewery bar in Palm Beach County and Boca Magazine’s December issue names Due South Brewing Co. as the best brewery in South Florida.

Thursday December 13, 2012 Due South Brewing Co. will host a Holiday Cookie/Dessert Exchange. Participants should arrive by 6:15pm and bring at least 2 dozen cookies or 1 dozen brownies or cupcakes. The brewery will provide boxes for people to fill with goodies to take home and share with friends and family.

In addition to the treats customers will bring, a few local businesses will also participate. Rustico Italiano in Lake Worth and The Backyard in Boynton will both be supplying some of their sweet specialties. Sugar Mama Sweets, a bakery which actually bakes many treats with Due South beer, will be here. The Little House in Boynton Beach is bringing some of their famous cobbler.

Come join us for a night loaded with flavors, fun, and friends at the local brewery.

Want to help design the next Due South t-shirt? We’ve got a “Drink. Craft. Beer.” shirt we’d like to add some additional artwork to. Click this link for a printable submission sheet or stop in the brewery and doodle up a design while you have a beer. Then just give your submission to your bartender and that’s it.

The rules are simple.

Use black ink or marker only.

Use a pencil to write your name and email address on the back of the submission.

Submissions must be in by Wednesday November 21st.

We’ll display the submissions in the taproom and we’re going to let the people pick the winning design at our Black Friday Party on November 23.
